Sony may reconsider ending PlayStation physical disc production
Sony is reportedly reviewing its plan to discontinue physical PlayStation disc production, which was originally scheduled to begin in January 2028. The potential shift follows significant backlash from players, collectors, and game publishers who rely on physical media for business models, particularly those specializing in limited collector editions.
Kenzo Saruhashi, CEO of Nippon Ichi Software and President of NIS America, confirmed during PAX West that his company is in active discussions with Sony regarding the impact of this transition. Saruhashi noted that Sony appears to be paying close attention to customer feedback. While no official reversal has been announced, industry reports suggest Sony has been surveying developers to gauge the commercial consequences of moving to a purely digital model.
One potential compromise being discussed is the 'Code in a Box' (CIAB) format, where physical packaging is provided but contains only a digital download code rather than a disc. This would allow retailers to maintain a physical presence while aligning with Sony's observation that digital sales now account for a vast majority of PlayStation revenue.
