Sony Music joins AI standards coalition and sues Anthropic

Sony Music Group has become the first major music company to join the Coalition for Responsible AI in Music (ARIAM). The alliance, which includes members such as The Walt Disney Company, the BBC, and The New York Times, aims to establish transparent and enforceable guardrails for generative AI to protect copyright integrity and human artistry.

Simultaneously, Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have launched a billion-dollar intellectual property lawsuit against AI company Anthropic and its CEO, Benjamin Mann. The plaintiffs allege that Anthropic scraped copyrighted song lyrics, compositions, and sheet music to train its Claude AI model, which can then reproduce those lyrics and generate new songs. The lawsuit seeks an injunction against these practices and statutory damages that could potentially reach billions of dollars, citing the work of artists including Taylor Swift, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Mariah Carey.
