Sony patent proposes tap-to-pay functionality for PlayStation controllers

Sony has filed a patent titled ‘Video Game Controller-Driven Information Transfer’ that proposes using PlayStation controllers as intermediaries for data and payment transfers. The technology would likely utilize NFC, Bluetooth, or physical contact to allow users to tap a smartphone, credit card, or gift card against the controller to facilitate transactions.

Key applications described in the patent include making purchases on the PlayStation Store—such as digital games, add-ons, and in-app currency—more efficient by bypassing the need for manual data entry via on-screen keyboards. The system could also be used to transfer account information, potentially allowing players to sign into a console more quickly by tapping a mobile device.

While the patent details various security considerations and communication methods, it does not guarantee that these features will be implemented in current or future hardware, such as the PS5 or PS6. Implementation would require addressing potential security risks, such as unauthorized account access or impulsive spending.
