Sony patents AI system for adaptive NPC and boss behavior
Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent for an artificial intelligence system designed to create adaptive non-player characters (NPCs) and bosses in video games. Titled “AI-adapted non-player character for video game system,” the patent describes using machine learning to analyze player data and adjust character behavior in real-time or during post-session updates.
The system monitors various player metrics, including reaction times to attacks, success rates in dodging, blocking, or parrying, and the specific weapons or consumables used. Conversely, the AI tracks NPC attack patterns and how effectively a player counters them. This data allows bosses to adjust their combat strategies to counter a specific player's strengths and weaknesses.
Beyond combat mechanics, the patent suggests the AI could dynamically alter NPC dialogue, appearance, and voice characteristics, such as pitch and volume. While the technology aims to reduce development time and costs by automating complex scripting, it remains a patent application and does not guarantee the technology will be implemented in future PlayStation hardware or titles.
