Sony Pictures acquires international rights to horror film ‘Buddy’

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired the international rights to the independent horror film ‘Buddy’ in a seven-figure deal. Directed by Casper Kelly, the film has become a commercial success, grossing approximately US$ 26.5 million in the United States against a US$ 5 million budget.

The film follows the dark reality behind a fictional 1990s-style children’s program called ‘It’s Buddy!’, featuring a large orange unicorn voiced by Keegan-Michael Key. The production gained notoriety due to its deceptive aesthetic; its nostalgic, colorful visuals led some parents to mistakenly bring young children to screenings, resulting in reports of distress when the film’s violent, R-rated content was revealed.

The cast includes Cristin Milioti, Topher Grace, Michael Shannon, Patton Oswalt, and Keegan-Michael Key. Following its debut at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the film has maintained high critical standing, including an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
