Sony Pictures signs three-year deal with director Destin Daniel Cretton

Sony Pictures has signed a three-year overall deal with director Destin Daniel Cretton following the massive commercial success of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The film has become the highest-grossing domestic release in U.S. history, earning approximately $944 million in the United States and over $2.4 billion globally.

Under the new agreement, Cretton will develop various film projects through his production company, Hisako Films, alongside president Jeyun Munford. While the deal focuses on development and does not explicitly guarantee Cretton will direct a sequel to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, Sony executives have expressed strong interest in his return to the director's chair.

Cretton’s upcoming schedule includes a live-action ‘Naruto’ adaptation for Lionsgate, which is slated to begin filming early next year. Additionally, co-writer Chris McKenna revealed that early script iterations for the recent Spider-Man film explored different narrative paths, including a storyline involving the character Ben Reilly and a British accent for Peter Parker, though these ideas were ultimately discarded.
