Sony plans affordable PlayStation 6 using AI frame generation
Sony Interactive Entertainment is preparing the next‑generation PlayStation 6 with a cost‑saving strategy that relies on AI‑based frame generation, ray‑tracing and its own upscaling technology (PSSR). Leaked slides suggest the console will aim to deliver a "4K‑like" experience at 120 fps by generating intermediate frames, allowing the hardware to stay within a modest power envelope (around 160 W) while avoiding an expensive high‑performance APU. The company has already secured TSMC contracts for the processor and GDDR7 memory deals, positioning a 2027 launch despite rising RAM prices and chip shortages.
In a separate interview, PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino hinted that future hardware will be "versatile" and usable in multiple settings. He referenced the PlayStation Portal streaming device and discussed exploring different screen sizes, controller designs, and even the possibility of a handheld form factor reminiscent of the PSP or PS Vita. While no handheld was officially announced, the remarks indicate Sony is evaluating portable options alongside the main console line.
