Sony plans higher PlayStation 6 prices and ends PC ports, drawing criticism from former executives

Sony Interactive Entertainment disclosed that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will not be subsidised; the company will pass increased semiconductor costs to consumers, raising launch prices outside Japan. Management said the firm will focus on monetising its existing user base through higher PlayStation Plus fees, DLC and AI‑driven development tools, while expanding the hardware ecosystem beyond the living‑room set‑up.

Former PlayStation leaders, including former SIE Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida and former SIE America chief Shawn Layden, condemned Sony’s decision to cease bringing its single‑player titles to PC. Layden argued that PC releases generate significant revenue without cannibalising console sales and that abandoning the PC market reduces the brand’s reach. The criticism comes as rival Microsoft confirms it will continue releasing its exclusives on PC.
