Sony PlayStation 5 faces challenges from new jailbreak and emulators

A new jailbreak for the PlayStation 5 has enabled several unauthorized capabilities, including the ability to play original physical PS2 discs via the PS5SX2 emulator. This development bypasses Sony's official hardware limitations, which typically restrict the console to PS4 and PS5 titles.

Additionally, a new application called ‘Overdrive’ has emerged, allowing users with jailbroken consoles to access a storefront for free games and DLCs. The jailbreak is compatible with firmware versions 7 through 13.60, though Sony's recent firmware 14.20 release aims to block these exploits.

These developments come amid growing consumer frustration regarding Sony's reported plans to phase out physical media by 2028. The rise in emulation and unauthorized software access is being viewed as a significant challenge to the company's digital ecosystem and revenue models.
