Sony PlayStation 6 pricing may be stabilized by digital gaming shift
Industry analysis suggests that Sony’s transition toward digital gaming may help control the retail price of the upcoming PlayStation 6. According to Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis, moving away from physical media allows Sony and publishers to avoid the production, packaging, and shipping costs associated with discs.
By increasing revenue through the PlayStation Store, Sony may be able to subsidize the hardware to keep the PS6 at a reasonable price point, preventing it from exceeding the $1,000 mark that many analysts fear. While some speculate the console could launch as a digital-only device with an optional disc drive accessory, the shift is supported by current trends where over 80% of Sony’s game sales are already digital.
Discussions regarding the next generation of consoles also highlight consumer concerns regarding performance versus affordability. While some users remain satisfied with current hardware like the PS4, others are questioning whether the next leap in graphical power justifies the potential cost of new hardware.
