Sony PlayStation confronts Steam competition while planning $1,000 digital‑only PS6

Analysts estimate Steam’s monthly active users exceed 200 million worldwide, over 50 % larger than PlayStation’s 125 million MAU reported by Sony. Steam’s revenue reached about US$11.1 billion in the first half of 2026, showing steady growth.

In response, Sony announced it will cease releasing physical game discs by 2028 and is developing a next‑generation PS6 that will sell for more than $1,000 and operate solely with digital licences. The company expects the high price to limit sales, focusing instead on hardcore gamers willing to pay premium prices and on higher margins from digital license sales.
