Sony PlayStation executive warns against simultaneous handheld and PS6 launch
Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has expressed skepticism regarding rumors that Sony may launch a handheld console alongside the PlayStation 6. During a conversation on YouTube with Kiwi Talkz, Layden argued that Sony has historically struggled to sell two different pieces of hardware simultaneously.
To illustrate his point, Layden cited the era of the PlayStation Portable (PSP). While the PSP was a major commercial success, he noted that the company simultaneously faced significant difficulties selling the PlayStation 3. He suggested that the success of one device can mask underlying struggles with another, creating an unsustainable balance.
Layden emphasized that maintaining two product lines forces a company to split development budgets, marketing campaigns, and executive focus. He suggested that if Sony chooses to pursue a handheld format, it should focus its resources entirely on that platform rather than attempting to support both home consoles and handhelds at once. While Sony has not confirmed these rumors, Hideaki Nishino recently stated the brand is exploring technologies to enable gaming in various forms and locations.
