Sony may reconsider ending PlayStation physical disc production

Sony is reportedly reassessing its decision to end physical disc production for PlayStation consoles by January 2028. Following significant backlash from consumers and industry partners, reports suggest the company has distributed an extensive survey to game developers to gauge the potential impact of a fully digital transition.

Leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead indicates that the survey indirectly asks developers about the implications of discontinuing physical media. If feedback is overwhelmingly negative, Sony may consider a “mea culpa” or a partial reversal of its stance. While digital sales currently dominate, with some reports suggesting they account for 85% of recent sales, physical copies remain a significant revenue stream for many titles.

Industry analysts note that while consumer boycotts have seen limited immediate impact on player activity, the concerns regarding ownership, resale, and long-term preservation of games remain central to the debate. The decision remains complex due to the higher profit margins associated with digital distribution compared to the logistics and costs of physical manufacturing.
