Sony PlayStation hardware: rising PS5 costs and PS6 rumors
The PlayStation 5 has experienced unusual price increases throughout its lifecycle. Since its 2020 launch, where the disc version cost $499 and the digital version $399, prices have risen significantly. By 2026, the digital version reached $599 and the disc version $649. The PS5 Pro, introduced in 2024, also saw price climbs from $700 to $900. These increases are attributed to industry-wide shortages of NAND and RAM memory chips, which have driven up production costs.
Regarding future hardware, rumors suggest the PlayStation 6 could launch as early as November 2027. Reports indicate that the main processor for the next console has reached the ‘tape-out’ stage, meaning the chip design is ready for fabrication and testing. Additionally, leaked images and patents have circulated regarding a new Sony controller featuring a touchscreen and movable components.
