Sony patents audio-to-visual and haptic feedback system
Sony has filed a patent titled “Audio Processing System and Method” that describes a technology capable of analyzing in-game audio before it is played to generate real-time cues. The system aims to translate sound into various forms of feedback, including haptic vibrations in a controller, LED light indicators around a touchpad, or visual icons and text on the screen.
By classifying sounds—such as distinguishing ambient noise from critical cues like approaching enemies—the system can provide players with immediate directional or situational information. This could enhance immersion and improve accessibility for players with hearing impairments.
A notable aspect of the patent is its potential compatibility with legacy games. Rather than requiring developers to rewrite game code, the technology could function through the operating system or a dedicated helper application, allowing older titles to benefit from these advanced sensory cues.
