Sony PlayStation reaches record 125 million monthly users as PS5 shipments dip
Sony Group reported that its PlayStation platform logged a record 125 million monthly active users in June 2026, a 2 % increase from the previous year. The growth helped the Game & Network Services segment post a 37 % rise in operating profit to ¥202 billion, contributing to an overall operating‑income surge of 40 % to ¥476.5 billion for the quarter. Net income rose 32 % to ¥342.2 billion and the company lifted its fiscal‑2026 operating‑income forecast.
In the same quarter, PlayStation 5 shipments fell to 1.6 million units, down from 2.5 million a year earlier, while total playtime declined 4 % year‑on‑year. Despite the hardware slowdown, Sony confirmed it has secured enough memory components for the 2026 PS5 production plan, even as memory prices rise. Digital distribution now accounts for 82 % of new console game releases, with Sony planning to end physical disc production for new titles after January 2028.
