Sony to halt physical discs for new PlayStation games from Jan 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. The move reflects the fact that digital downloads accounted for roughly 80 % of the company’s full‑game software sales in fiscal 2025, signalling a shift toward fully digital distribution. Titles released before the cutoff, as well as games already scheduled for disc releases, will continue to be available on physical media.
On the same day, Sony detailed a phased shutdown of the PlayStation Store on the legacy PS3 and PS Vita platforms, with closures starting in selected Latin American markets in 2026 and a global shutdown slated for July 2027. Purchased content will remain downloadable for an indefinite period.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is testing an internal “Disc2Digital” feature that lets Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners convert eligible physical discs into a digital entitlement linked to the disc. The licence can be transferred when the disc changes hands, preserving resale and lending options. The feature is viewed as a bridge for users should Microsoft’s next‑generation “Project Helix” console launch without an optical drive.
The combined announcements mark a broader industry transition away from physical media, raising concerns for collectors, second‑hand retailers, and gamers who value ownership outside of digital storefronts.
