Sony posts 40% jump in operating profit on PlayStation and memory business boost

Sony Group Corp. announced that its operating profit for the second quarter rose 40% to 476.5 billion yen, beating analysts' expectations. Revenue increased 8% to 2.8 trillion yen and net profit reached 342 billion yen, a one‑third rise from the prior year. The surge was driven primarily by the PlayStation ecosystem and the company's image‑sensor division, while a weaker yen also added to the upside. Sony raised its full‑year outlook but the share price reaction remained muted, suggesting the market had already priced in the strong gaming performance.

The earnings come amid a broader memory boom that is reshaping the tech sector. Sony secured memory supplies early for its PlayStation consoles, a move highlighted alongside Nintendo’s higher‑priced new console launch and Micron Technology’s earnings from the same scarcity. The shortage is pressuring device makers and influencing investor sentiment across the semiconductor and gaming industries.
