Sony PSX: The hybrid PlayStation 2 multimedia device
Released exclusively in Japan in December 2003, the Sony PSX was a hybrid multimedia device rather than a traditional gaming console. While its name is often confused with the original PlayStation, the PSX was actually a specialized machine derived from the PlayStation 2 architecture.
Developed by Sony’s electronics division rather than Sony Computer Entertainment, the device functioned as a digital video recorder (DVR) and a multimedia hub. It featured a built-in TV tuner, a DVD player and recorder, and came equipped with a hard drive of either 160 GB or 250 GB. These specifications allowed users to record television programs and store them on the hard drive or burn them to DVDs.
Beyond its video capabilities, the PSX was capable of playing PlayStation 1 games and managing music and photos. It also served as an early platform for the XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface, which later became a staple in Sony products like the PSP and PlayStation 3. Because of its focus on home entertainment, the unit was marketed more as a digital video recorder, often including a remote control while requiring the DualShock controller to be purchased separately.
