Sony raises PlayStation Plus subscription prices in Europe

Sony announced a price increase for its PlayStation Plus service that takes effect on 20 May. The new fees apply to the three subscription tiers – Essential, Extra and Premium – in selected European markets such as Germany. Monthly rates rise from €8.99 to €9.99 for Essential, €13.99 to €15.99 for Extra, and €16.99 to €18.99 for Premium. Quarterly (three‑month) prices increase from €24.99 to €27.99, €39.99 to €43.99 and €49.99 to €54.99 respectively. Year‑long subscriptions remain unchanged at €71.99, €125.99 and €151.99. The adjustments affect only new customers and users who renew after their current term ends; existing subscribers keep the old price until their plan expires. Sony cited current market conditions and a desire to secure stable, predictable revenue as reasons for the change, aligning its pricing model with competitors that favor longer‑term commitments.

The increase mirrors a broader industry trend toward monetising subscription stability and reducing short‑term flexibility. Analysts note that higher quarterly and monthly fees may encourage gamers to opt for annual plans, which offer a lower monthly cost. While the price hike impacts millions of PlayStation users, it does not affect the service’s core features such as online multiplayer, game libraries and exclusive discounts.
