Sony updates PS5 Slim hardware with new motherboard and cooling

Sony has implemented a silent hardware revision for the PlayStation 5 Slim, identified through the new EDM-051 motherboard found in the Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition bundle. While the changes do not impact raw graphical performance or frame rates, they significantly improve the console's thermal management and long-term maintainability.

Key technical updates include a redesigned cooling system that utilizes a liquid-metal interface similar to the approach used in the PlayStation 5 Pro. This new design features improved containment to better control the liquid metal around the APU and a modified heatsink. Additionally, the internal architecture has been simplified to optimize airflow and production efficiency.

A major improvement for maintenance is the introduction of a more accessible, replaceable CR2032 CMOS battery. In previous revisions, replacing this battery was a difficult process that often required significant disassembly. The new layout also includes an optimized, lower-cost HDMI retimer to ensure stable signal transmission. These modifications suggest Sony is focusing on extending the hardware lifecycle and easing the repair process for users.
