Sony removes 8K branding from PlayStation 5 packaging

Sony has removed the 8K branding from its PlayStation 5 packaging, a change that occurred quietly in 2024. This omission follows the limited adoption of 8K resolution and the fact that the standard PS5 lacks the hardware power to run games at 8K with playable frame rates.

While Sony previously promised 8K output via software updates for the standard console, those updates were never released. The newer PlayStation 5 Pro, released in 2024, attempts to fulfill the 8K promise through upscaling technology rather than native rendering. It utilizes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to upscale images, often rendering titles at approximately 4K before increasing the resolution.

Native 8K gaming remains a significant hardware challenge, as the resolution requires roughly four times the processing power of 4K.
