Sony blocks The Last of Us Part II multiplayer mod for PC

Sony Interactive Entertainment has successfully blocked the release of an unofficial multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II on PC. The modder, known as Speclizer, announced the cancellation on September 13, 2026, after receiving a formal request from Sony to cease the project.

Developed since January 2026, the mod aimed to provide a competitive experience similar to the Factions mode from the first game. It featured 4v4 matches, custom maps, matchmaking, and a specialized loadout system. The project had gained significant community attention, including a 25-minute gameplay demonstration in June.

While Sony has not officially stated the reasons for its intervention, reports suggest the mod's use of Patreon for development funding may have influenced the decision. Speclizer expressed deep disappointment at the project's end but stated they would move on to work on an original, self-owned project to avoid future copyright issues.
