Sony to End Physical PlayStation Discs in 2028, Industry Leaders React
Sony announced it will cease manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028, moving all future releases to digital distribution. The company cites a shift in consumer preference and the higher profit margin of digital sales, which already accounted for roughly 80 % of its full‑game software revenue in fiscal 2025. In the United States, only seven PlayStation titles sold more than 100 000 physical copies in the first half of 2026, and physical game sales have fallen to a historic low. Digital‑only PS5 units represent about 27 % of U.S. console sales.
Industry figures responded. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said the disc phase‑out is unlikely to disrupt the sector and could lower hardware costs. Rockstar co‑founder Dan Houser argued that companies should continue offering physical discs when consumer demand exists. Separately, Rockstar confirmed that in Japan the product codes for the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI expire 170 days after issuance, roughly 8 May 2027, limiting the usability of unopened boxes.
These developments signal a decisive move toward an all‑digital gaming ecosystem, raising concerns about ownership, preservation and market dynamics among players and publishers worldwide.
