Sony to End Physical PlayStation Discs by 2028

Sony announced that it will cease manufacturing new physical game discs for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. The move follows a long‑term shift toward digital distribution, with digital downloads accounting for roughly 80 % of the company's full‑game software sales in fiscal 2025 and the digital‑only PS5 model representing about 27 % of PS5 shipments in the United States.

Physical game sales have been sliding to record lows in the United States, the United Kingdom and other markets, reinforcing the trend. Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot said the transition is unlikely to disrupt the industry and could lower console costs, while Rockstar co‑founder Dan Houser argued that companies should keep a disc option if consumer demand persists.

The change also affects upcoming releases. Grand Theft Auto VI will be sold only as a “code‑in‑a‑box” edition; in Japan the product codes on the physical boxes expire after 170 days (around 8 May 2027), which could diminish the resale value of unopened copies. In response to the disc phase‑out, some PlayStation users have organised a week‑long #PSBlackout boycott, urging a temporary shutdown of PlayStation Network services.
