Sony to end physical PlayStation disc production by 2028

Sony has confirmed it will end the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. This transition to a digital-only ecosystem for new releases has sparked significant debate regarding consumer rights, ownership, and pricing.

Jacob Navok, a former Square Enix executive, suggests the move could lead to lower digital game prices. He argues that removing manufacturing and distribution costs, combined with increased competition among publishers, could create a more dynamic pricing environment similar to Steam. However, critics point out that unlike the open PC ecosystem, PlayStation remains a closed storefront where Sony maintains total control over transactions, potentially preventing price competition from third-party marketplaces.

Industry analysts, including Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis, view the shift as an inevitable economic necessity to manage rising hardware component costs and maintain profitability. Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential for higher console prices in future generations, such as the PS6, if manufacturing costs continue to climb.

In response to the upcoming change, Sony has begun including warning stickers on PlayStation 5 packaging to notify customers that games released after the 2028 cutoff will be available in digital format only. The decision has already triggered protests and calls for boycotts from gaming communities concerned about the loss of physical collections and the secondary used-game market.
