Sony to end PlayStation physical disc production in January 2028

Sony has confirmed its decision to end the production of new physical PlayStation game discs starting in January 2028. The company plans to transition fully to digital distribution via the PlayStation Store. Despite significant backlash from the gaming community, including a petition with over 345,000 signatures and calls for economic boycotts, Sony CFO Lin Tao stated the company will proceed with the transition, citing the ongoing global shift toward digital content.

Warnings regarding the end of physical media are already appearing on PS5 console packaging. However, Sony has clarified that physical discs released before the January 2028 deadline will remain compatible with PlayStation consoles.

The move has sparked debate regarding the future of gaming ownership. Critics argue that the shift to digital-only formats will eliminate the secondary market for used games, restrict the ability to lend titles to others, and grant platform holders more control over pricing and licensing. Conversely, some industry players, such as Capcom, appear less concerned, noting that a vast majority of their sales are already digital.
