Sony Ends Physical Game Discs by 2028, Sparks Global Gamer Protests
Sony announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for PlayStation titles starting in January 2028, moving entirely to a digital‑only sales model. The decision has triggered a wave of backlash from gamers worldwide, including mass cancellations of PlayStation Plus subscriptions, a coordinated digital‑strike protest on 25 July, petitions, and calls to boycott upcoming releases such as Spider‑Man: Brand New Day.
Analysts such as Dr. Serkan Toto and Jason Schreier argue that the protests are unlikely to alter Sony’s plan because digital sales are far more profitable; a loss of even 1 % of PlayStation Plus revenue would be negligible for the company’s 120 million active users. The backlash has not stopped Sony from proceeding: the company’s CEO Hiroki Totoki sold more than half of his personal shareholdings shortly after the announcement, and a Dutch consumer group has filed a $457 million lawsuit claiming the end of discs will eliminate the secondary market and raise game prices.
Despite the overall shift, some first‑party titles will still see physical releases. Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the upcoming God of War: Laufey will be available on disc, a reassurance that was highlighted by numerous media outlets. Other industry voices, including Hideo Kojima, warned that the move could erode consumer ownership and preservation of games. Microsoft’s rumored Project Helix may also drop disc drives, indicating a broader industry trend toward all‑digital consoles.
