Sony to End PlayStation Physical Disc Production by 2028

Sony announced that it will stop manufacturing physical game discs for PlayStation consoles on 31 January 2028, moving all new releases to a digital‑only model. CFO Lin Tao said the shift will not hurt the company’s profit, noting that more than 70 % of PlayStation revenue now comes from digital downloads and that the cost of producing, packaging and shipping discs is no longer justified.

The decision has sparked a global backlash. A petition against the disc phase‑out has gathered roughly 356 000 signatures, and a planned “PlayStation Network blackout” in August 2026 aims to pressure Sony by encouraging users to avoid the service. Industry groups such as the UK Entertainment Retailers Association warned that ending physical media reduces consumer ownership rights, including resale and sharing.

Despite the controversy, Sony’s financials remain strong. The PlayStation 5 has sold 95 million units worldwide, and operating profit for fiscal year 2026 rose 37 % aided by tariff refunds. Data from analysts show that some titles still sell well physically – for example, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sold 48 % of its copies on disc – but overall the market trend favors digital distribution.

Rumours suggest Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox (Project Helix) might retain optical‑disc support, but the plan remains unconfirmed.
