Sony to end PlayStation physical disc production by 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will cease starting in January 2028. The company cited shifting consumer preferences and a market transition toward digital distribution as the primary reasons for this move.
This decision has significant implications for the global gaming industry, including the Polish sector, which comprises 824 studios and over 14,000 specialists. Polish developers, including representatives from Bloober Team and CI Games, noted that digital sales are significantly more profitable for publishers. For a game priced at nearly $70, a publisher receives approximately $49 from a digital sale compared to roughly $26 from a physical copy, due to costs associated with manufacturing, distribution, and retail margins.
Beyond economics, the shift raises concerns regarding consumer ownership and digital sovereignty. While digital downloads offer convenience, they move users away from physical ownership—which allows for reselling and lending—toward a model based on licenses and platform-controlled access.
