Sony to end PlayStation physical game discs by 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that, beginning January 1 2028, all new PlayStation titles will be released only as digital downloads. The company said physical discs now represent less than 5 % of software sales and the move reflects shifting consumer preferences toward online distribution.
The decision has sparked widespread criticism from gamers, retailers and consumer‑rights groups. Players fear loss of ownership, resale and the ability to preserve collections, and many have called for cancellations of PlayStation Plus subscriptions as a protest. Retailers warn the change could undermine the second‑hand market and increase Sony’s control over pricing and distribution.
In Brazil, parliamentarian Erika Hilton filed a complaint with the National Consumer Secretariat, questioning the legality of selling disc‑compatible consoles while ending disc production and raising concerns about higher prices and digital‑only licensing.
Sony also revealed that its disc‑manufacturing plant in Salzburg, Austria will be repurposed to produce optical micro‑lenses for cameras, VR headsets and medical devices, with an investment of about €30 million. The company assures that existing physical titles and games released before the 2028 cutoff will continue to be supported.
