Sony to end production of new PlayStation game discs after 2027
Sony has announced that it will cease manufacturing discs for new PlayStation 5 games released after January 2028. While the company will stop producing physical media for new titles after this period, it will continue to support the production and sale of discs for games released prior to that date.
Retailers such as GameStop had expressed concerns regarding the impact of this digital migration on physical stock. However, Sony clarified to publishers and retailers that physical copies of titles released through 2027, as well as existing titles, can still be ordered and replenished based on consumer demand.
In response to the shift, Bloober Team, the developer behind the Silent Hill 2 Remake, expressed its intention to continue producing physical editions for as long as possible. CEO Piotr Babieno noted that while digital distribution is more cost-effective and simpler, physical media maintains an emotional connection with collectors and fans.
