Sony to pay $7.85 million in PlayStation antitrust settlement

Sony Interactive Entertainment has received preliminary court approval for a $7.85 million settlement regarding a class-action antitrust lawsuit, Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment. The lawsuit alleged that Sony unlawfully monopolized the digital games market by discontinuing the sale of game-specific vouchers, which prevented PlayStation owners from purchasing digital games through other online retailers.

The plaintiffs argued that these actions forced consumers to use the PlayStation Store exclusively, often at higher prices than other marketplaces. Affected titles mentioned in the suit include PlayStation exclusives like ‘The Last of Us’ as well as third-party games such as ‘Mass Effect Trilogy’ and ‘Resident Evil 4’.

Sony has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that the company did not violate any laws. The settlement process has faced delays, having been rejected twice by a presiding judge—most recently in July 2025—due to insufficient details regarding potential recovery for class members. A hearing is scheduled for October 15 to confirm the settlement sum, allocate attorney fees, and establish a distribution plan for eligible US customers.
