Sony to End Physical PlayStation Game Discs by 2028
Sony announced that from January 2028 it will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games, a move that will apply to both the current PS5 and the forthcoming PS6. Titles released before that date will continue to be sold on disc, but all future releases will be digital‑only, eliminating the used‑disc market and shifting revenue to downloadable licences.
The decision has sparked concern among independent retailers, especially in Canada, where store owner Umair Khan of Hi‑Tech Gametraders warned that the shift may force shops to diversify into collectibles and other merchandise. In the United States, digital sales remain strong; Activision’s recent release of Call of Duty Black Ops 2 recorded 5.25 million weekly US players, underscoring consumer preference for digital formats despite protests.
Separately, social‑media users have alleged that Sony is employing bots to defend the policy change. YouTubers such as “Moore’s Law Is Dead” have highlighted suspicious accounts, but no concrete evidence has been presented and Sony has denied the accusations. The story has been reported across multiple regions, including Japan, Canada, the United States, Germany, Italy, Turkey, and Brazil.
