Sony to end new PlayStation disc production by 2028

Sony is moving toward a digital-only future for PlayStation, announcing that it will stop supporting physical disc production for newly released games starting in January 2028. While games released before this date will maintain disc support, the company is actively informing consumers through its PlayStation Direct store and hardware packaging about the transition.

This shift is supported by industry-wide data. Square Enix reported that approximately 90% of its game sales are now digital, with 6.65 million digital copies sold compared to only 730,000 physical copies in a recent fiscal quarter. Capcom has reported similar trends.

The decision has met resistance from some gaming communities, leading to calls for boycotts and concerns regarding game ownership, offline access, and the secondary market for used games. However, industry figures like God of War creator David Jaffe have defended the move, stating that the needs of the majority of customers outweigh those of a smaller group of collectors.
