Sony transfers 419 extended reality patents to Meta
Sony has entered into an agreement to transfer a massive portfolio of 419 patents related to extended reality (XR) technologies to Meta. The deal, which reportedly dates back to December 2025, includes intellectual property covering virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), as well as head-mounted display systems and image processing.
According to records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), 43 of these patents have already been transferred between June and September 2026. The remaining patents are distributed across various global jurisdictions, including the United States (180), Japan, China, South Korea, and Europe.
The scale of this transfer has led to industry speculation regarding the future of Sony’s PlayStation VR line. While there has been no official announcement from Sony regarding the discontinuation of the PlayStation VR2, the move follows a period of limited software support and commercial challenges for the headset. The acquisition provides Meta with significant technological assets to bolster its ongoing development of XR and Quest devices.
