God of War Laufey announced with Faye as the new playable lead

Santa Monica Studio officially unveiled God of War Laufey during PlayStation’s State of Play showcase. The next mainline entry in the franchise shifts the focus from Kratos to his late wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye (also called Laufey), who becomes the first playable protagonist in the series.

The story begins immediately after Faye’s funeral, when she awakens in the Afterlife realm called the Everywhen – a chaotic space where dead gods from various mythologies coexist. Early gameplay shows her confronting deities such as the Egyptian war goddess Sekhmet and the Mongolian/Buddhist war deity Begtse, confirming the game’s cross‑mythology setting.

Combat has been re‑engineered for Faye’s speed, agility and magic‑based abilities, featuring a legendary sword, soul‑stealing attacks and a magical companion cube named Phranque, plus a ribbon guardian called Rue. Developers stress that Kratos will still feature in future titles, but he does not lead this installment.

No release date has been announced; the game is currently wishlist‑able for PlayStation 5. The announcement is positioned as a major narrative and gameplay expansion for the God of War franchise.
