Sony's PlayStation 6 launch likely pushed to 2028 over memory chip shortage

A well‑known hardware leaker, KeplerL2, says Sony has already secured contracts with TSMC and memory suppliers, making a 2027 launch of the PlayStation 6 financially unavoidable. Sony’s CEO Hiroki Totoki has acknowledged that the company is still evaluating timing and pricing amid soaring DRAM and SSD costs.

Analysts at Embracer Group, citing the worldwide AI‑driven demand for memory, predict the console could be delayed until 2028 or even 2029. Sony may consider cutting specifications, adopting new compression methods, or exploring alternative business models to keep the device affordable, but the component price surge remains the chief obstacle to a 2027 release.
