Soorya Krishnamoorthy, a prominent cultural icon and former ISRO scientist, has passed away at the age of 76. He died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram following long-term treatment for lung-related issues.
Krishnamoorthy had a distinguished career that bridged science and the arts. He served as a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for over 20 years, where he worked alongside Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He later transitioned into cultural leadership, serving as the chairperson of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and completing three terms as the director of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation.
He is best known as the founder of the Surya Festival, launched in 1977. The event grew into one of the world's major cultural celebrations and is recognized in the Limca Book of Records as Asia's longest-running cultural festival. Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan honored Krishnamoorthy's legacy, describing him as a multifaceted talent who helped place Kerala's cultural identity on the global stage.
