Sophia Luísa Moraes dos Santos, 3, dies after cancer battle in Campo Bom, Brazil

Sophia Luísa Moraes dos Santos, a three‑year‑old girl from Campo Bom in Brazil's Vale dos Sinos, died on Monday morning following complications from a prolonged fight against cancer. After completing oncologic treatment, she continued to suffer severe health issues, including heart problems, a lung infection and esophageal inflammation. On Sunday she was hospitalized with fever and respiratory distress; on Monday she suffered two cardiac arrests and could not be revived.

The child’s image was later misused in fraudulent online fundraising campaigns. Police investigations, dubbed Operação Sophia, uncovered a criminal network that used her photos, videos and artificial‑intelligence‑generated content to solicit fake donations, diverting roughly R$294,500. The operation was carried out in five Brazilian states. The municipal government expressed deep condolences, and funeral services were held on Monday and Tuesday in Novo Hamburgo.

The case highlights both the personal tragedy of a young cancer patient and the broader issue of scams exploiting vulnerable individuals.
