Sophia Williams-De Bruyn calls for resistance against modern challenges

During the 70th anniversary commemoration of the historic 1956 Women’s March at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, anti-apartheid stalwart Sophia Williams-De Bruyn called on South African women to continue their struggle against modern societal challenges.

De Bruyn highlighted a "painful paradox" in the country's current state, noting that while the era of apartheid oppression has passed, women now face different enemies, specifically gender-based violence (GBV), corruption, poverty, and systemic inequality. She lamented the scourge of GBV, stating, "We fought to banish the pass laws, yet today our women are prisoners in their own homes."

Addressing both authorities and the public, De Bruyn urged leaders to demonstrate "bold, honest and accountable leadership" to combat corruption and protect vulnerable citizens. She encouraged women to remain resilient, describing their unity, voices, and votes as "critical weapons" for progress.
