Sophie Cunningham’s viral point barred from WNBA merchandise as she runs youth basketball camp

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham became a viral sensation after a heated June game against the Phoenix Mercury, where she pointed at former teammate DeWanna Bonner for over 20 seconds. The clip spread across social media, spawning memes, GIFs and even a White House‑shared video. The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) ruled that its licensed partners may not use the image for merchandise, citing a policy against monetising player conduct from confrontations. The union’s decision does not prevent Cunningham from independently licensing the gesture, provided no WNBA or WNBPA logos appear.

Separately, Cunningham hosted a free basketball camp in Carmel, Indiana, attracting more than 300 boys and girls. Over four hours she led drills, scrimmages and one‑on‑one challenges, emphasizing competitive play and community outreach. The event highlighted her off‑court popularity and commitment to youth development.

Both stories underscore Cunningham’s growing profile: a viral on‑court moment influencing league licensing policy, and off‑court engagement through a large‑scale youth camp.
