Sophie Straat's festival remarks not deemed discriminatory in the Netherlands and Belgium

Dutch singer Sophie Straat asked "white men" to step back during a mosh pit at the Best Kept Secret festival, saying the request was meant to give women, queer people and people of colour more space. A similar call was made at the Gentse Feesten in Belgium.

Hundreds of complaints were filed with the Dutch discrimination hotline Discriminatie.nl and with Belgium’s anti‑discrimination centre Unia (over 160 reports in Belgium, 127 at Unia alone). The Dutch body concluded there was insufficient evidence of discrimination based on skin colour or sex, citing European Court of Human Rights case law that grants artists broad freedom of expression. Unia reached the same conclusion, noting that no white men were excluded from the concert.

The Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine whether the remarks fall within protected speech or constitute criminal discrimination. The episode has sparked a public debate, with some public figures defending Straat and others condemning the remarks, and has raised questions about the balance between anti‑discrimination law and artistic freedom.
