ÍSOR begins seabed surveys for Eyjagöng tunnel project
ÍSOR has commenced seabed surveys to assess the feasibility of a potential tunnel connection between the Icelandic mainland and Vestmannaeyjar. The project, conducted for Eyjagöng ehf., aims to gather data regarding the structure and quality of the seabed.
The surveys are being carried out aboard the Icelandic Coast Guard's hydrographic survey vessel, Baldur, in collaboration with international specialists. For the first time in Iceland, the team is utilizing a sparker seismic reflection profiler, a specialized instrument purchased by eight Icelandic institutions with support from RANNÍS. This tool allows for high-precision mapping of the uppermost strata beneath the seabed. The measurements are expected to continue for two weeks.
