Sorana Cîrstea and Gabriela Ruse draw US Open opponents

Romanian tennis players Sorana Cîrstea and Gabriela Ruse have learned their first-round opponents for the US Open singles tournament.

Gabriela Ruse, ranked 63rd in the WTA, faces a difficult opening match against the world number 3 and third seed, Jessica Pegula. The winner of their match will advance to face either Venus Williams or Sofia Kenin.

Sorana Cîrstea, ranked 17th and seeded 16th, will play against Austria's Julia Grabher. Cîrstea has a previous record against Grabher, having won their two prior encounters in Linz (2020) and Istanbul (2022). Both Romanian players are positioned in the same half of the tournament bracket.

Other notable matchups include top seed Arina Sabalenka against Camila Osorio, Alexander Zverev against Lorenzo Sonego, Carlos Alcaraz against Roman Safiullin, and Novak Djokovic against Mariano Navone.
