Sorana Cîrstea to face Maria Timofeeva in Hong Kong WTA 250 opening round

Sorana Cîrstea, the top seed at the WTA 250 tournament in Hong Kong, is scheduled to face Maria Timofeeva of Uzbekistan in the first round. Cîrstea, ranked 36th in the world, enters the tournament amid speculation that this may be one of the final events of her professional career.

Timofeeva, aged 22 and ranked 72nd, recently secured a WTA 125 title in Porto. Her recent form includes a second-round appearance at the US Open and a competitive match against Naomi Osaka in Beijing.

Cîrstea's recent Asian swing has been challenging due to recurring leg injuries, which caused her to miss several tournaments including the WTA 1000 in Beijing. Her previous appearances in Wuhan and Ningbo saw mixed results, including a first-round exit in Wuhan and a victory in the opening round in Ningbo.
