Sordo Madaleno designs sunken open-air art gallery in Los Cabos

Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos has designed Arte Abierto Baja, a new 180-square-meter open-air art gallery located within the Ánima Village development in Los Cabos, Mexico. The gallery is designed to host large-scale sculptures and site-specific installations, facilitating a dialogue between international and Mexican artists and the local landscape.

The architectural concept features a 17-meter ramp that descends four meters below ground level, transitioning visitors from the plaza above into a space defined by tall concrete walls and an open sky. The structure utilizes pigmented, bush-hammered concrete to harmonize with the rocky, arid terrain of Baja California Sur. The gallery is set to open with an installation by Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas.
