Sorin Oprescu spotted in Greece after extradition refusal
Sorin Oprescu, the former mayor of Bucharest, was recently photographed relaxing at a terrace on a Greek island. This sighting comes after the Thessaloniki Court of Appeal rejected a second extradition request from Romanian authorities in November 2025.
Oprescu is a fugitive facing a prison sentence of 9 years and 8 months for crimes including bribery, money laundering, and forming an organized criminal group. His sentence was recently reduced from an initial 10 years and 8 months following a ruling by the Bucharest Court of Appeal in October 2025.
The Greek judiciary has twice refused to extradite Oprescu, with the most recent decision citing his health concerns. Oprescu, who has resided in Greece since 2019, has stated that he is attempting to lead a normal life and is in good health.
