Moldova water dispute: Chișinău Mayor and Government clash over Nistru River levels
A dispute has emerged between the Chișinău municipality and the Moldovan government regarding water supply and the Nistru River. Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban accused the central government of intentionally reducing water discharge from the Dubăsari Reservoir, which forced the city to activate emergency pumping systems to maintain supply. Ceban claimed the reduction occurred without adequate coordination or transparency.
Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder rejected these accusations, stating that the reduction in discharge was a necessary measure to protect water reserves due to declining reservoir levels. The Ministry maintains that there is sufficient water for the capital and that the actions are intended to prevent a larger crisis.
In a separate context, the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) has denied allegations that former Prime Minister Vlad Filat was responsible for historical agreements that impacted Nistru River water control. Additionally, Mayor Ceban has faced legal scrutiny regarding public apologies to several individuals following offensive remarks made in 2024.
