Sandro the elephant arrives at Mato Grosso sanctuary
Sandro, a 54-year-old Asian elephant, has arrived at the Santuário de Elefantes Brasil in Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, following a 1,600-kilometer journey from the Quinzinho de Barros Municipal Zoo in Sorocaba, São Paulo.
The transfer follows a long-standing legal dispute regarding the animal's living conditions. While the sanctuary reports a successful arrival and initial adaptation, including natural behaviors like dust bathing, the move was met with protests in Sorocaba. Some residents and officials opposed the transfer, leading to tensions during the animal's departure.
In separate regional news, a jaguar named Theodoro was rescued in Teodoro Sampaio, São Paulo, after traveling long distances on a highway, and an equine rescue operation was conducted in Itapevi, São Paulo, though the animal involved did not survive.
