Papeda Summit 2026 opens in Sorong to discuss Papua's sustainable development

The Papeda Summit 2026 (Papua Action for Development, Economy, and Sustainable Nature) officially opened in Sorong, Southwest Papua, on September 2, 2026. The forum, organized by the Southwest Papua Provincial Government alongside over 50 civil society organizations, aims to establish a strategic platform for sustainable development in the Papua region.

Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan attended the event, emphasizing the need to trust Papua in its developmental direction. The summit brings together approximately 1,000 participants, including indigenous communities, academics, government officials from 15 ministries, and private sector representatives. Key topics of discussion include the blue and green economies, carbon management, environmental protection, and the empowerment of indigenous peoples.

Organizers noted that the summit serves as a collaborative space to leverage Papua's vast natural resources, including 34.2 million hectares of primary forest and 1.6 million hectares of mangroves. The event is intended to drive a transition toward a regenerative economy that integrates human, nature, and cultural foundations.
